It finally happens. You go to put on your favorite pair of pants and you realize you can’t zip them up. Or you walk from your car to the store and you find yourself out of breath. How ever you get there, you reach a breaking point and decide you have to make a change. You’re ready to change your life.
I once read that if you don’t like something in your life you have two choices: you can either change it or accept it. Sounds too simple right? But it isn’t, it really is that easy. Either you dislike something enough to change it, or you don’t and you’ll learn to live with it.
If you don’t dislike something enough, you won’t put in the work to make the necessary changes. You have to do some deep soul-searching to decide whether you’re there yet. If you are, great! If not, you need to come to an understanding with yourself and figure out what would need to happen in order for you to get there.
Making changes in your life requires a certain amount of determination, self-discipline and inspiration. You’re more likely to find these things and be able to hang on to them if you are truly ready for change.
Once you’ve determined you are, in fact, in a place you’re ready to change you’re ready for the next step: planning.
Having a firm plan in place (and a backup plan) is imperative if you’re looking to change your life. Know what you plan to change, how you’re going to do it and why. Make your planning specific and make sure you have set a goal to plan around. If you simply say “I want to lose 20 pounds”, that won’t be enough. You need to decide what kind of deficit you’re going to create and create your meal plans around that. And yes, you need to meal plan.
If you’re including fitness into your life, determine what your goals are. Are you looking to lose fat, gain muscle, increase your endurance? Understanding your desired outcome will allow you to plan your workouts effectively.
Once you’ve set out a clear set of goals and a plan to get there, you’re ready to execute. This will not be a linear path. There will be mistakes and challenges along the way. Make your peace with it ahead of time but hold on to why you started your journey.
You have it in you to do what you set out to do. So, make the decision to change your life and do it. There is no day like today to start your journey.
